After several months of intensive XTL negotiations, Amberger Kaolinwerke has acquired the Nabwerk Schwandorf alumina operations of Vereinigte Aluminiumwerke AG, east of Nurnberg, for an undisclosed sum. The acquisition was completed towards the end of January this year when the Nabwerk Schwandorf activities were transferred to a new company, Nabaltec GmbH, ownership of which was simultaneously transferred to Amberger Kaolinwerke Hirschau. Nabaltec has the capacity to produce 80,000 tpa of calcined aluminas for a wide range of industries -- ceramic applications include tiles and sanitaryware, engineering, electrical and wear resistant ceramics; refractory uses cover almost the entire spectrum of consuming industries, both in brick and monolithic form; and the abrasives and polishing industries are also important market sectors.
