BIDCO takes steps to regain bauxite market

Guyana's Bauxite Industry Development Co. (BIDCO) is taking major steps to redress the country's dramatic loss in its share of the world bauxite market. Guyana used to supply about 85 percent of the world's refractory bauxite and 80 percent of the world's chemical grade bauxite. The country now supplies 25-30 percent of world bauxite consumption, and several years ago opted out of the abrasives market (see IM March '95, p.28 for a global review of refractory bauxite). Speaking at Metal Bulletin and Industrial Minerals' first conference on International Bauxite and Alumina Markets in Miami on 3-4 April, Sylvester Carmichael, vice president of marketing at BIDCO, summarised the past, present, and future of Guyana's once world dominant bauxite industry.
