THERE IS increasing interest in evaluating and ultimately developing new mineral deposits in central and eastern Europe, including CIS countries. Kaolin is one of Ukraine's chief industrial minerals, which up to now has been mainly developed for ceramic and refractory applications, although paper grade kaolins have also been evaluated. Here we profile a potential new source of kaolin from Ukraine for which JSC Energosoyuz is seeking partners to assist in its development. Ukraine (Geoinform), Ukraine's primary kaolin sources produce some 780,000 tpa (see fable), and account for 1 8 percent of world kaolin production. The discrepancy is mostly likely owing to the particular grades included in the respective data, eg. processed grades for pigments against all grades for say ceramics, refractories, glass, etc. Kaolin production in Ukraine for 2002 was estimated by the US Geological Survey to be 225,000 tonnes. However, according to the State Information Geological Fund of
