PACLITAXEL, A COMPLEX diterpene amide derived from the Pacific yew tree, has been called by the U.S. National Cancer Institute (NCI), "the most important anti-cancer agent for the past 15 years." The interest in paclitaxel dates back to 1962, when crude extracts of Taxus brevifolia bark were tested in a largescale exploratory plant screening program of the NCI. Paciltaxel was later identified as the active constituent of the bark extracts by Wani and Wall.
