Kaolin products for the paper industry have come a long way in the last 40 years. Technological developments have allowed advances in beneficiation so that papermakers today can choose from a multitude of grades, or, increasingly, custom-made products to proviide the performance they require. Paper coating grade kaolin (CGK) development can be discuussed in terms of three generations of product characteristics: forst generation with steep partiicle size distributions to impart brightness, gloss and print gloss; second generation products similar to first generation but modified to boost specific coated surface properties, enhance printability and/or lower coating costs; and third generation which are functionally engineere pigments, chemicaly modified to provide distinct functinality ie. for ink-jet printing.
