Prospects for aluminosilicate brick production in Nigeria

The production of refractory bricks is vital in the lining of furnaces for various industrial processes such as steel, cement, glass and petrochemical plants. A broad range of refractory raw materials including fireclay, quartzite, dolomite and magnesite, which could serve for the production of refractories, are available locally in relatively large reserves and appropriate quality. Because of a lack of functional plant, the bulk of refractories serving the Nigerian industries are currently being imported, with great discomfort to the industrialists. The actual and projected market demand for aluminosilicate refractory bricks are presented in this article. The need for joint venture arrangement or subregional co-operation to actualise local production of refractories to the benefit of the relevant industrial processes is highlighted.
