TITANIUM MINERALS ARE used as feedstocks to produce TiO_2 pigment; one of the most important raw materials used in the paint and coatings industry. Titanium dioxide pigment can represent as much as 15 percent of the cost of a high grade architectural coating and from 10 percent to 30 percent of its weight. Consuming nearly 60 percent of all TiO_2 produced worldwide, the paint industry depends on TiO_2 pigment for its opacity and bright whiteness among other characteristics, which make paints valuable in providing durability and aesthetics to assets such as buildings, infrastructure, equipment and consumer goods.
