Glutamine synthetase (GS) was purified from lettuce seeds incubated under red light. The amount of enzyme protein was estimated by rocket immunoelectrophoresis using a specific antiserum. Red light and gibberellin separately increased the level of enzyme protein in the embryonic axis. The increases in the protein were completely suppressed by cycloheximide. High temperature (35°C) caused a rapid decrease in the enzymatic activity, but no decrease in the level of enzyme protein. Translation in vitro of poly(A)+RNA extracted from the seeds demonstrated that level of translatable mRNA for GS increased in the seeds irradiated by red light
