摘要

The myelin sheath, an extended plasma membrane wrapping around an axon, is crucial for high-speed impulse conduction. Numerous neurological diseases specifically attack the myelin sheath with disabling and often fatal results. The lamellar structure of myelin sheath has been well characterized by polarized light microscopy, electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. However, visualizing-intact myelin in live tissues and in vivo is not possible with these existing techniques.
