A novel life science information appliance

The accelerating pace of research and development in the life sciences, biotechnology, and drug discovery is rapidly expanding the need for more convenient and powerful tools. Bench space is at a premium and the resulting trend toward smaller instrumentation is advancing quickly. Many tasks in the biolaboratory, such as pipetting reagents, making solutions, checking ODs (optical densities), and designing oligos, require calculations and setup planning. The system described here is an advance in laboratory equipment that combines a portfolio of everyday functions that are fundamental to life science laboratories handling nucleic acids, proteins, and colorimetric assays. Staffing resources can thereby be maximized and more sensibly refocused on results interpretation and planning of follow-up experiments.
