摘要

Vitamin a (VA) is a fat-soluble vitamin stored in the liver. It is essential for normal human development, growth, immunological functions, and eyesight. VA deficiency is the leading cause of childhood blindness in the world, and contributes substantially to childhood morbidity and mortality in Asia and Africa. Measurements of VA in blood and other body fluids that are simple to collect are of little value for identifying people at risk for VA deficiency. Unfortunately, concentration of VA in these fluids depends on tissue reserves only during extreme deficiency or toxicity. Liver concentrations of VA can vary from almost 0 to over 1000 mg/kg without engendering blood concentration changes warning of toxicity or deficiency.
