Commercial manufacturers of biomolecules are likely to focus on three issues that are central to the livelihood of any business: developing a product that people need, launching this product on the marketplace, and then selling the product in the face of competition. Since no company is likely to make a secure living in the long run by selling a single product only, these three important aspects of business life usually form a repeated cycle (Figure 1). Companies are continuously developing, launching, and selling products.
