Over the last few years, the tea industry of our country has been passing through a bad phase in terms of very poor price realisation in the domestic market and drastic fall of export quantum. In effect, many medium and small-sized tea plantation units in the corporate and proprietory sector have become financially crippled, reached at shut down point. But this situation has not occurred suddenly, nor caused by any isolated factor. In this article, however, an attempt has been made to diagnose in brief the contributing factors to the bitter taste of our brew with special reference to that of Assam.
