The horrible mayhem at the Dalgaon Tea estate in Jalpaiguri district on the cursed morning of 6th Nov, 2003 could not have occured at a worse time for the tea industry which has already been ailing for a considerable period. Nineteen people were burnt to death when the house of Tarakeswar Lohar, a Citu leader, had been set on fire as the aftermath of a clash over recruitment. The incident took place in Falakata, 2 km. from Birpara an 72 km. from Jalpaiguri town. According to the report, Tarakeswar recruited three persons from outside the garden allegedly against huge consideration. This incident, naturally gave birth to severe unrest among the workers. The labourers tried several times for having words with Tarakeswar but in vain.
