In India, tea processing has been remaining a conventional industry. The share of Indian tea in the world trade is gradually reducing whereas value-added forms of tea are becoming popular in other countries. The production of traditional black tea involves processing and handling of large amount of waste materials which can be minimised by producing instant form of tea. Many importing countries of Europe are re-exporting tea in value-added forms. The same can be done in India from the green tea leafitself. A major change in tea processing is, therefore, advocated with more emphasis on value addition, The present processing set-up also needs modernisation.
