An impressive panel of experts got together at a workshop during the 37th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Addiction Medicine in San Diego, CA, May 6, 2006, to review the latest trends on emerging biomarkers for the accurate detection of alcohol use and abuse. One of these biomarkers, known as ethyl glucuronide (EtG), has been known for decades but only recently has its use become widespread. It is formed when a small fraction (0.5%) of the alcohol ingested is conjugated with glucuronic acid to produce a nonvolatile, water-soluble metabolite, EtG.
