The American Electrophoresis Society (AES) held its 22nd annual meeting in Cincinnati, OH, October 31-November 3, 2005, under the umbrella of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers fall meeting. To some, the thought of AES meeting in the same place with chemicalengineers seems to be a case of odd bedfellows. However, as discussed below, the experimental problems with nanoscale devices are much more difficult than anticipated, and chemical engineers seem to have both the training and interest to help chemists make major contributions to understanding and solving the problems. Hence, it is important and useful to continue with a meeting that focuses on improving the basic technology of electrically facilitated separations.
