TheRhizobium leguminosarumbiovartrifoliisymbiotic plasmid pRtr5a was transferred to theRhizobiumsp.(Hedysarum coronarium)strain RB16. Transconjugants carrying pRtr5a ineffectively nodulatedTrifolium repens, T. pratenseandT. alexandrinumand were unable to nodulateH. coronariumplants. Agarose gel electrophoresis of transconjugants showed that all had lost an indigenous plasmid (230 Md). These results suggest that this plasmid harbours the symbiotic determinants for nodulation onH. coronarium.
