Effective management strategies to control herbicide-resistant common poppy (Papaver rhoeas) are currently being investigated in a rotational field trial with a known resistant population. Results from 2 experimental years show that treatment with ALS-inhibitors alone provided no control of this P. rhoeas population but high levels of control were still achieved using a non-ALS herbicide. The overall number of poppy plants and subsequently poppy heads m~(-2) was significantly lower in oilseed rape compared with a wheat crop. However control from the non-ALS herbicides in oilseed rape was poorer than in wheat. Currently in the UK the number of resistant broad-leaved weeds is low and there are non-ALS herbicide options for controlling them. However, with the threat of key alternative herbicides being removed from the UK market due to legislation changes, controlling or preventing ALS-resistant broad-leaved weeds in the future could be extremely challenging.
