Pyridoxine : The Versatile Vitamin

In 1926, J. Goldberger and R. D. Lilli fed rats on a diet deficient in what was considered to be the pellagra-preventive factor. These animals developed dermatitis. P. Gyorgy later observed that the same factor prevented the development of skin lesionin rats. He proposed that this factor be called vitamin B_6. Goldberger's pellagra-preventive factor, riboflavin, and vitamin B_6 were shown to be different substances. Vitamin B_6 was isolated in 1938 by three research groups working independently andwas synthesized by S. A. Harris and K. Folkers in 1939.
