Genetic Base of Tea Plantations in Sri Lanka -- Retrospective & Perspective

The genetic base of planting materials te of prime concern in modern agriculture, especially to overcome the problem of genetic vulnerability. The author studied the history of planting materials of Srilankan tea plantations in 1999-2002 while workingas a Commonwealth Consultant at Tea Research Institute of Sri Lanka, Talwakelle. The same is presented here for the benefit of all concerns associated with tea cultivation particularly in Srilanka and in general for others to take lesson from Srilankanexperience. The subject is of great significance to Tea Board of India and the Indian Tea Industry which have recently launched a special Tea Development Fund for uprooting and replanting of old teas in the next 15 years.
