Tucked away in the foothills of the Himalayan mountains is the beautiful hill resort of Darjeeling which produces the world's finest tea, unparalleled in flavour. Good Darjeeling are indeed the champagne of teas. There is no other area in the world which can produce the muscatel flavour. Darjeeling district is located in the extreme north of the state of West Bengal. The altitude of tea growing areas in Darieeling hills ranging from 600 to 2000 metres. Like all precious things, this tea is availablein very limited quantities. In fact, Darjeeling accounts for only 2% of India's total production of tea. There are 20,000 hectares under tea cultivation in this region producing about 12 million kgs of tea. The average yield of Darjeeling is still very low being about 640kg/ha as against 1742kg/ha in the plains of North East India. Further, the yield in Darjeeling has virtually remained stagnant over the last two decades.
