A thematic strategy on the sustainable use of pesticides - an overview of the proposal being prepared by Directorate General Environment of the European Commission

Despite all existing efforts to control the use of pesticides and prevent any undesirable effects on human health and the environment, unwanted amounts of certain pesticides can still be found in environmental media and residues exceeding acceptable limits can still be detected in some agricultural produce. It is, therefore, necessary to reduce the risks from pesticides to humans and the environment as far as possible, by minimising or eliminating, where possible, the exposure of humans and the environment. With the Decision adopting the 6th Environment Action Programme (6EAP), the European Parliament and the Council recognised that the impact of pesticides on human health and the environment, in particular from those used in agriculture (Decision n°1600/2002/EC), must be reduced further. They underlined the need to achieve a more sustainable use of pesticides and called for a significant overall reduction in risks and of the use of pesticides consistent with the necessary crop protection.
