Safer handling of pesticides in greenhouses.

Agrochemicals are used with a risk for polluting soil and water. The aspect of point sources in greenhouses has not been previously studied. The objective of this project has been, through case studies in 18 companies, to collect information on real life handling of pesticides, in order to survey high risk operations and need for improvements. Results showed that a main problem was that the pesticide storage often was located far away from the greenhouse. Dry products were measured and premixed close to the storage, sometimes over a normal sink. Liquid products were normally measured in the greenhouse. Growers indicated problems with large containers and small measuring scoops. Many good examples were also noted. Risks would be reduced if the storage was moved to a "safe area" in the greenhouse, with optimum conditions for rational work and surroundings that limit the consequences of accidents.
