Bears are synonymous with the Great Smoky Mountains. You may see them in the park; you'll definitely see their likeness in the shops. But, says Rob Dunn, there are other delights in this wilderness. RELATIONSHIP with nature can be complex but a little superficial. I was thinking this on a recent trip into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (affectionately referred to as 'the Smokies'), which straddles the border between Tennessee and North Carolina. I was with my wife, daughter and in-laws, and, like most visitors to the park, my in-laws wanted to see bears and they wanted to see them as quickly as possible. Bears, they had read, were to be found in Cades Cove at the park's west end. You could see them, they told me, from the car. So off we went, to cruise for bears.
