Agricultural areas often show a heterogeneity in soil types. Transitions within a field from loamy brown soil to gravel patches are not uncommon. The fields in practice are usually fertilized uniformly, even if they have significantly different soil properties and yield potential. This can lead to over- and undersupply of plants and lower N-efficiency (Griepentrog & Kyhn, 2000; Rattan & Stewart, 2015). Moreover, the N-content of organic fertilizers is difficult to estimate and hence the amount of additional mineral fertilizer needed is difficult to calculate. In order to improve the N-efficiency of organic and mineral fertilizers and to allow site-specific fertilization, a multispectral, tractor supported sensor system was developed. Using algorithms, the required amount of fertilizer is determined for specific plants or crops.
