Determination of isotopic ratios using an HP-4500 inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer

The factors responsible for the occurrence of errors in the measurement of relative isotopic abundances of Nd, Yb, and Gd using an HP-4500 mass spectrometer (Hewlett-Packard, U.S.) are analyzed. The different sensitivity of the mass spectrometer to ions of different mass is shown to be the main source of error in the measurement of isotopic abundance. Optimum concentrations of the elements in solutions for determining their isotopic abundances are established.
