ADOPTION OF MEMBRANE SYSTEM FOR RECOVERY OF WATER FROM TANNERY EFFLUENT AND TDS MANAGEMENT

Annual World leather process is estimated at 16 million tons of hides and skins. More than 50% of world leather production is done in Asian countries such as China, India, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Pakistan, etc. Wastewater discharge from world tannery sector is about 600million m~3/annum. The tanneries in Asia discharge more than 350million m~3 of waste water per annum. Shortage of quality water for leather process, management of Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) in the treated effluent and safe disposal of large amount of sludge generated from effluent treatment plants are the major issues in Asian region. This is mainly due to the use of poor quality water and chemicals in liming and other tannery operations as well as in effluent treatment plants for physiochemical treatment.
