Management of clinical mastitis in goats

Mastitis is one of the most economically important diseases of goats, which causes severe losses due to reduced milk production, and occasionally death of the affected animal. In the treatment of mastitis, resistant bacteria may cause profound economic loss due to ineffective treatment, unless antibiotic sensitivity test is done before. Therefore, the present investigation was undertaken to study the pausative organisms associated with goat mastitis and their antibiogram. Milk samples were collectedfrom the goats presented at the University Veterinary hospital, Mannuthy with the history of mastitis during the period of one year from January to December. Milk samples were subjected to California mastitis test (CMT) and the positive milk samples werecollected aseptically for in vitro sensitivity tests against different antimicrobial agents. The cultural examination was carried out as per the method described by Cowan (1974). In vitro antibiotic sensitivity was studied by disc diffusion technique (Barry, 1976) using antibiotic discs of Hi-media laboratories.
