Haemato-biochemical alterations in experimental lactic acidosis in calves

Lactic acidosis was induced in eight crossbred male calves of 5-6 months of age by feeding wheat flour @ 3 0 mg/kg b wt orally once. The blood samples were collected at 0,12,24, 48, 72 and 96 hr and day 6, 8,10, 12 and 15 to record haemato-biochemicalalterations in these calves. There was slight elevation in haemoglobin while blood glucose increased significantly from 12 hr onward but became to about normal by day 10. Total protein, chloride and calcium levels were normal. There was significant decrease in the blood bicarbonate level whereas phosphorus, lactic acid and AST and ALT enzymes levels increased significantly from 12 hr onwards. However SAP did not reveal change in acidotic calves.
