Soil, fodder and serum mineral interrelationship in some districts of eastern Uttar Pradesh

A survey was conducted in four districts of eastern Uttar Pradesh viz., Varanasi, Allahabad, Ballia and Sultanpur using soil, fodder and blood/serum samples to ascertain their mineral contents. Soil calcium level was minimum in Allahabad while Varanasi and Sultanpur were deficient in calcium in fodder and serum, respectively. Soil magnesium level was significantly lower in most districts ranging from 6.01 to 9.37 ppm. Soil phosphorus and zinc were lower than their critical values and ranged between 4.78- 8.87 ppm and 0.69-0.95 ppm, respectively. Fodder was deficient in xinc in Varanasi. However sodium, potassium and iron levels in soil and fodder were within the normal limits in all the districts. Sultanpur was most deficient for soil copper and cobalt status. Maximum fodder copper deficiency was found in Allahabad. Serum magnesium and phosphorus levels were low in Varanasi and Allahabad, respectively, while serum zinc was low in Allahabad. Serum copper and cobalt values were lowest in Sultanpur. The soil fodder and serum mineral status was significantly correlated at 1 and 5% levels. The values of enzymes AST and ALT were lowest in Varanasi and Sultanpur, respectively, while ceruloplasmin was minimum in Varanasi and SAP in Ballia. T_3 and T_4 contents were lowest in Allahabad and Sultanpur, respectively, while vit A and E were minimum in Ballia and Varanasi districts, respectively.
