Interlocking nailing for repair of humerus shaft fractures using image intensifier in dogs.

This article describes the use of interlocking nailing for the repair of transverse and oblique diaphyseal fracture of the humerus in 4 dogs in India. One dog died 10 days after surgery due to unrelated causes, while the remaining 3 dogs started to bear weight on the affected within 1-3 postoperative days. Radiography showed considerable amount of callus on three sides of the fractures at 24, 25 and 34 days after surgery. Limb function was excellent in all cases. Complete bone healing was achieved after 22, 16 and 14 weeks in cases 1, 2 and 3, respectively. These results show that closed intramedullary interlocking nailing with image intensifier is an ideal method for diaphyseal humeral fracture repair in dogs.
