Azimuth propulsion was introduced during the Second World War as a propulsion method that would offer military landing vessels the increased maneuverability required to adequately fill their roles. The first azimuth propulsors, by modern standards, were small, noisy, and inefficient. It was not until the 1970s that it became technologically feasible to design and produce azimuth propulsors of any significant size or efficiency. These mechanical units were used to maneuver harbor tugs in the ports of continental Europe.
