The present experimental study was conducted on 6 apparently healthy French jacks (Equus asinus) administered with thiopentone sodium, xylazine and thiopentone sodium, detomidine and thiopentone sodium, and midazolam and thiopentone sodium in groups A, B, C and D, respectively. The heart rate was found significantly (P<0.05) increased during anaesthesia and after recovery as compared to before anaesthesia values in animals, which were administered with thiopentone. The respiratory rates decreased significantly (P<0.05) in all groups during anaesthesia and after recovery barring animals of xylazine-thiopentone group. The shortest induction period was recorded in midazolam-thiopentone group (42.33±5.5 s) and longest induction period was seen in animals administered with detomidine and thiopentone (61.00±3.20 s). The duration of anaesthesia, recovery period and complete recovery period were shortest in animals of thiopentone alone group and longest in animals of detomidine-thiopentone group. Thiopentone sodium when premedicated with midazolam its dose rate was reduced by approximately 50%.
