Refractory canine pododermatitis due to mixed infection of Demodex canis and Malassezia pachydermatis in a dog - a case report

Malassezia pachydermatis is an opportunistic yeast and has been isolated from the normal ear canal and ear canal with otitis externa in dogs and cats (Muller et al., 1983). In India it has been isolated from dogs showing erythematous, scaly, alopecic,hyper pigmented and pruritic lesions on skin (Pal et al., 1997) and from normal and infected ear canal (Sinha et al., 1976). The organism was found associated with 72% cases of otitis in dogs (Breitwieser, 1997). A clinical case of refractory pododermatitis due to mixed infection of D. canis and M. pachydermatis in an Alsatian dog is reported here.
