Effect of sodium chloride on growth and chemical contents of grape rootstocks.

Six-month-old rooted cuttings of 5 rootstocks, i.e. Dogridge (Vitis champini), Jawahar (V. vinifera) and hybrids H-516 (V. labrusca cv. Catawba and V. vinifera cv. Beauty Seedless) and H-1204 (V. vinifera and V. lanata), were grown in pots and irrigated with sodium chloride solution (2, 4, 6, 8, 110 or 12 ds/m). The level of reduction in shoot growth due to salinity was lowest in Degrasset, followed by H-1204, Dogridge and H-516. The level of reduction in root growth due to salinity was lowest in Jawahar, followed by Dogridge and Degrasset. Dogridge had the highest proline (13.53 mg/g), P (0.32 mg/g) and K:Na (3.06 mg/g) contents, whereas Degrasset had the highest N (1.45 mg/g) and Na (0.36 mg/g) contents. The highest K content (1.15 mg/g) was recorded for H-1204. Degrasset and Dogridge were tolerant of NaCl up to 6.8 and 6.5 dS/m, respectively.
