Developed jointly with Nihon Furrtace Kogyo, the HRS burner, Fig. 1, uses ceramic elements as regenerators to absorb heat from high temperature flue gas generated by combustion in the furnace. Due to their high efficiency in recovering waste heat, interest in these burners has increased in recent years. However, because conventional regenerative burners use ceramic pellets or balls, the equipment's large size has been a drawback. According to NKK, the use of ceramic honeycomb for the generator of the newly developed HRS burner design has resulted in an 80 percent reduction in size and 90 percent reduction in weight (see Fig. Other key benefits include a heat recovery efficiency in excess of 85 percent and remarkably low nitrogen oxide (NOx) emission levels.
