While many materials handling applications are getting more sophisticated, the item at the centre of most of them is not being left behind in its development. At first sight, the pallet is a humble base support that enables goods to be turned into easily handled unit loads. Increased varieties and new developments have increased the number of possibilities that can be provided by pallets. Simon Mendes of Allibert offers the example of plastic pallets, which are available in a number of formats to suit their intended use. The pallet deck can be either solid or ventilated, equipped with or without a retaining collar. The pallet base can be fitted with either runners or feet.
