Respiratory Care Unit of A Medical College, Kolkata Retrospective analysis of first one year data

In this retrospective study, we analyzed all cases admitted in respiratory care unit during September'07 to August'08 at the department of chest medicine, N.R.S. Medicine College. Total 106 patients were treated during the period with female male ratio was 1: 1.94, and 50.94% cases were above 60 years of age. Chest-department contributed 60.38% of all cases. COPD was the commonest primary disease (44.34%), and that was followed by other respiratory diseases mainly pneumonia (19.81%). More than half patients (52.83%) required invasive and 16.98% patients required noninvasive mechanical ventilation. Overall mortality was 30.19%. MODS and ARDS patients had higher mortality 80% and 66.67% respectively. Disease specific mortality was low in COPD (17.02%) whereas it was high in non-COPD chest diseases (42.86%).
