Phelan defined oligohydrominos as amniotic fluid index <5cm and border line oligohydrominos as amniotic fluid index between 5-8cm at 36-42 wks of gestation. Usually incidence of oligohydrominos in 1 -5% of pregnancy at term. Beyond 40 weeks it may rize upto 12% as amniotic fluid volume decline progressively after 41 weeks of gestation. Women with oligohydrominos are more likely to have abnormal and non-reactive fetal hear! sound tracing, increase incidence of fetal distress and thus increased incidence of caesarean section. Oligohydrominos is also the leading indication for labour induction & labour induction increases caesarean delivery.Oligohydrominos is associated with high rate of complications and increased perinatal morbidity & mortality. Thus recognition of oligohydrominos during pregnancy and labour help to identify women who need increased antipartum surveillance ior pregnancy complication.
