摘要

Objective : To determine the incidence of congenital hypothyroidism in neonates born in R.I.M.S. hospital Manipur. Materials and Methods : The study was based on the findings from cord blood samples collected from 1000 babies born normally to mothers having no systemic (especially thyroid disorders) and obstetrical complications during a period of two years. Estimation of serum thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) level was carried out by Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) method using Eliscan? (Diagnova) kit manufactured by Ranbaxy India in the Department of Physiology, RIMS, Imphal. Results : The mean, median and standard deviation for the TSH values of the samples were 8.833 mlU/L, 6.824mlU/L and 7i;59mFU/ L respectively.29.3% of the babies had TSH greater than 10mlU/L one baby was found to be having congenital hypothyroidism out of the 1000 screened. Conclusion : Congenital hypothyroidism represents one of the most common preventable causes of mental retardation, the finding of 1 case of Congenital hypothyroidism out of 1000 newborns screened indicates that incidence is high in this State.
