Effect of herbicides on weed growth, grain yield and nutrient uptake in rainfed low land rice

Weeds are self-grown and appear simultaneously with crop plant creating severe competition for nutrients, space, moisture and solar energy resulting in low yields of the crop. Hand weeding is the most common and effective method of weed control but it is becoming difficult and uneconomical due to high cost and non-availability of labour at peak period. Under such situations, chemical weed control is easier, time saving and economical as compared to hand weeding. Hence, the present investigation wascarried out to evaluate the effect of some new herbicides (Table 1) in kharif transplanted rice crop at Agricultural Research Institute, Hyderabad during kharif 2000. The soil was clayey loam in texture, with pH 8.2, low in available nitrogen (279.0 kg ha~(-1)), high in available phosphorus (30.6 kg ha~(-1)) and medium in potassium (235.0 kg ha~(-1)) contents. The experiment was laid out in a randomized block design with three replications.
