Field studies were conducted during 1996-97 and 1997-98 at the Experimental Farm of Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana. In these experiments, efficacy of sulphonyl urea herbicides i. e. metsulfuron methyl and tribenzuron methyl each at 5.0 and10.0 g/ha applied alone and as tank mix application with isoproturon (applied 30-35 days after sowing) was compared with 2,4-D at 0.5 kg/ha, an already recommended herbicide. All the treatments provided excellent control of Rumex spinosus and significantly improved grain yield over control (no weeding) treatment during both the years of investigations. On an average of two years, maximum grain yield ws recorded in tank mix application of metsulfuron 5 g+isoproturon 0.5 kg/ha which was closely followedby metsulfuron 10.0 and 5.0 g/ha and tank mix application of isoproturon+ 2,4-D 0.5+0.5 kg/ha which were 19.5, 15.3, 11.8 and 11.6 percent more than 2,4-D 0.5 kg/ha (recommended) and 146.9, 138.3, 130.9 and 130.5 percent higher than control (untreated),respectively.
