Science may have given up on the yeti, but after hearing a tale in a Nepalese bar, JONN1E HUGHES started believing that there may be some truth in the legend. IN 2001, TIM CALDER, a British mountaineer, was guiding friends and a few sherpas up Mera Peak in eastern Nepal. He'd climbed the peak before, but never this early in the season - the monsoon was still raging down below. At about 5,000m, the group got their first good view of the glacier ahead of them, still half a mile away. Gazing up, Tim noticed a peculiar dark shape, like a large figure. Altitude can play tricks on the mind, so he took Ms time to get into a better position, and looked again. The figure was still there, and now it was moving.
