Alterations in ruminal fluid and blood in acute ruminal acidosis of goats.

This study was conducted to investigate the alterations in ruminal fluid and certain biochemical parameters of goats with experimentally induced acute ruminal acidosis. Ruminal acidosis was induced in goats (n=6) using crushed rice at 40 g/kg body weight. The ruminal fluid became watery, milky white and sour. Moreover, it had a low pH (4.72+or-0.07) at 36 h post-induction (PI). Increase in methylene blue reduction time (MBRT), decrease in glucose fermentation, absence of sedimentation activity by 12-24 h PI, absence of iodophilic activity and reduction in protozoal count were also observed. Blood analysis showed significant increases in glucose, lactic acid, sodium and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) activities, whereas potassium level declined at 24 h PI. These changes did not return to normal up to 168-192 h after exposure to a carbohydrate substrate.
