The pathological effects of Lupinus angustifolius cv. ARABELLA (sweet lupin) of European origin were studied in rats. Thirty six healthy male rats of uniform body weight (85-90 g) were divided into four groups of nine rats each. Group I: LACT kept as positive control received 330 g of milk protein; Group II. NPC (Non-protein control), kept as negative control, received no protein, whereas experimental groups: Group III: LMU (Lupin seed meal without any amino acids) and Group IV: LMM (Lupin meal with methionine). The groups, III and IV, rats received 265 g L. angustifolius cv. ARABELLA ground seed meal/kg diet without methionine and 2.4 g methionine to fulfill the target requirement for the rats and minerals and vitamins. The rats were sacrificed in sequence of 21, 63 and 98 days after feeding. There had been no gross alterations in the body and or any organs examined. However, histo-pathologically, the experimental groups fed with sweet lupin for 21 and 63 days, showed widespread hepatic lesions (chronic toxic hepatitis along with a tendency to form bridging fibrosis), acute toxic nephritis and interlobular ductular hyperplasia and stunting growth of the duodenal villi in rats fed lupin diets as compared to controls. Rats sacrificed after 98 days showed regenerative changes in kidneys however, liver lesions showed an unabated fibrosis with bile ductular hyperplasia. This study confirms that toxic action of L. angustifolius was consistent and very strong even when fed for 98 days.
