c-Myc expression pattern in canine mammary and human breast cancer

Study on histopathological characterization as well as c-Myc expression pattern was undertaken in 15 canine mammary tumours and two human breast cancers by immunohistochemical method employing monoclonal antibodies. Of 15 canine mammary tumours 4 werebenign and 11 were malignant, while both human breast cancers were diagnosed as malignant. Benign cases included adenomas and benign mixed tumours while malignant neoplasms mcluded mammary adenocarcinoma(acinar/infiltrative/papillary/solid types) squamous cell carcinomas andmalignantmixed mammary tumours. Twohumanbreastcancers were diagnosed as infiltrativeductd cribrifonn carcinoma. Microscopically, infiltrative acinar adenocarcinoma of bitch mammary gland and infUtrative ductal carcinoma of human breast shared similar histological features, immunohistochemistry for c-Myc oncoprotein generally revealed strong nuclear and cytoplasmic immunolabellmg m mahgnant tumours excepting in an adenoma case where glandular epithelial cells in some localities exhibited strong nuclear signals. The results of strong c-Myc immunoIabeUing pattern in infiltrative ductal carcinoma of human breast resembled to its canine counterpart, which suggested the involvement of similar molecular and pathological processes in thedevelopment and progression of tumours.
