Therapeutic management of cardiac arrhythmia in canine

A clinical study was conducted to evaluate the therapeutic effectiveness of some drugs in cases of canine cardiac arrhythmia. For it, 20 cases each of tachyarrhythmia (HR > 140 beat/min) and bradyarrhythmia (HR < 60 beat/min) were randomly selected and grouped as T and B, respectively. These were further divided in sub group T_1, T_2 and B_1, B_2, respectively, of 10 dogs each. Apparently healthy 10 dogs with no signs of cardio-vascular system disorder were selected to serve as healthy control (gr C). Based on ECG and serum biochemical profiles conducted before and after treatment, antiarrhythmic drugs atenolol and verapamil were found equally effective in tachyarrhythmia while terbutaline was found superior as compared to theophylline + etophyllinecombination in the treatment of bradyarrhythmia.
