An investigation of outbreak of goatpox in Puducherry

The present report gives an account of clinical findings and investigation in goats showing signs of pox. One adult female goat of about 2 yr age and 2 kids of either sex aged about 3 months were presented at the Veterinary College Hospital with pox lesions on the nostrils, ears, thigh and abdomen. The animals were anorectic and dull and had bilateral mucopurulent nasal discharge, lacrimation, congested conjunctival mucous membrane and diarrhoea with rectal temperature of 40° to 41°C. Vesicles andscabs on lips, commissure of mouth and muzzle were noticed. The scab samples collected in phosphate glycerol saline were positive for goat pox by counter immunoelectrophoresis test. Examination of other neighboring flocks in the village revealed that none of the sheep intermingled with the affected goats showed signs of pox indicating species specificity of the pox virus. However none of the affected goats died during the observation period of next 30 days.
