Health risks associated with travelling Travelling is associated with a number of non-infectious and infectious health risks that can be minimised with preventative measures. The infectious risks can be subdivided into vaccine-preventable, and non-vaccine-preventable. The non-infectious risks include road-traffic accidents, sunburn, photosensitivity reactions, eczema, bites, altitude sickness, heatstroke, thromboembolic events and, in older travellers, cardiovascular events. To help prevent problems, simple precautionary measures along with vaccination, should be carefully considered before planning any travel, these are discussed briefly in Box 1. The long list of potentially infectious illnesses are summarised in Table 1.
